Can You Grow Sunflowers In A Pot? As a child I have been growing plants for years, and now is a good time to plant some of my favorite plants: sunflowers and other plants in a pot, such as tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and peppers.
These flowers are great for bees and other pollinating insects, and birds love to eat the seeds, so they are brilliant for native wildlife. Sunflower seeds grow small, produce impressive flowers and are easy to handle, protecting the eyes, ears, nose and eyes. They are also a great source of vitamins, minerals, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, zinc and magnesium.
Some varieties of sunflower grow much larger than others, so you need to provide a container that is the right size for the plant. To give you a rough idea of the pot size, I use a pot with a diameter of about 10 ” ‘to grow the smallest varieties. In the smaller varieties, they grow in pots with a diameter of about 10 ” and the larger sunflower grows in a larger pot of the same size (about 20 ” ‘in diameter). It is April in the UK, but there is still plenty of time for the plants to grow and bloom before temperatures fall again in autumn. If you plant sunflowers in a pot, you can give the pot some protection from the cold and sow the seeds in the plant. The risk of frost is lower in May at this time of year, so it is ideal to sow seeds at the end of April or the beginning of May, before the first frost.

If you are new to growing sunflowers with children, here are some tips on how to make it a success. If you have sunflower seeds that you can plant a bit late, don’t panic – you won’t have to wait long for these amazing flowers. Sunflowers grow best when planted in early summer, but you need seeds first.
Larger sunflowers
If you like ever-larger sunflowers, Mongolian Giant, Mammoth and Russian Giant can grow up to 3 m tall. There are many different varieties of sunflower seeds available for sale on the Internet, but these options make it easy to find one that suits your space, color scheme and garden style.
As for color, some are good for bold yellows, but try Italian white, moonlight and moon walker. Some exotic red wines are the most popular sunflowers, such as the Red Sunflower, the Blue Sun and the Yellow Sunflower.
I also love to grow a dwarf variety called Teddy Bear (pictured above) that is very compact and has wonderfully soft, fluffy flower heads that are low enough to be touched by children. My children have always wanted to grow a wide variety of sunflowers, so I usually choose one for them. A simple approach that works well for children is to go to a garden center or go online and let them have some fun choosing the seed package they like best.
Once you have your sunflower seeds, you only need a base set to plant them, and planting is really quick and easy.
Fill the planter with compost
Fill the planter with compost until it is two-thirds full and stick your finger in a small hole in the middle of the compost. Next, plant a few seeds in the palms of each child and ask them to throw one in each hole. It really doesn’t matter if you end up putting more than one seed in each pot; in fact, you can show later what a difference it makes in the size of your plant.
Fill the pots with compost and label each pot with the name of the child after whom you will name it. Your children will want to know what seeds they have planted, so write their name on the back of each label.
Depends on the season
How long it takes for sunflowers to grow depends on the season, weather and variety you choose. Warm temperatures and longer days allow seeds to germinate and grow faster, so sunflower seeds should start to grow in 1-2 weeks. Now it is time to drink the pots well and put them in a cool, dry place for at least 3-5 days.
On the back of the seed pack you can see how quickly you expect the sunflowers to bloom, and also that the plant will thrive. I decided to rush – because it is the fastest growing variety of sunflower with a flowering time of 1-2 weeks.
I planted the seeds in mid-April and left the pot indoors for the first few weeks, planting them all in April. This is a nice visual way to tell to your children that the quantity of nutrients and soil affects plant growth. Can you see how all the plants in this pot that have more than one seed are small?
Night frost
If night frost is still possible outside, you need to protect the pot a little, otherwise the seeds will not germinate and grow well. You can also put them in a greenhouse or a fresh bed, but a sunny window sill is perfect. If your crowded plants are struggling, they can be split into smaller pots and planted in different places.
If you plant your sunflowers in a pot in late spring, it is nice to leave them outside, but you want to keep them moist and not really moist. Wherever you put the pot, check the compost regularly and water it regularly if it feels dry. When the frost danger is over, you can put the pots back in the garden for a few weeks or even months.
If you have sunflower sprouts on the windowsill, you must turn the pot to prevent them from tilting towards the light. When your sunflowers grow larger, you will need a stick to support the stems, or even a piece of paper or a paper towel.
Simply slide the stick into the compost and tie it to yourself with a small string or tie the string around the stem, which thickens with the growth of the plant. As mentioned above, you can put your sunflower plants in a larger pot to grow where they grow.
Pot of the right size
Choose a pot of the right size and add some compost to the bottom and then fill the gaps in the sides and top with more compost. Then take the plants out of their old pot and put them into a new one and fill the gap on both sides and top. I grow dwarf sunflower varieties, so I use two different types of sunflower, one red and one white, to create a nice mixed presentation.

I always make a chart that takes its place in the fridge and is eagerly updated, and my kids love doing this every year. This project, which brings a little of mathematics, is perfect for children aged 3 and 6 years and over. If you get them to take care of the plants very carefully, they will definitely win.
